Kaupapa Māori recruitment

Ara | Te Pūkenga is committed to transforming the Māori tertiary experience and giving effect to Te Tiriti o Waitangi. Becoming a Tiriti-led institution is an important step in progressing towards the achievement of equitable partnerships. A key priority is that Māori can learn and succeed as Māori, and that outcomes for Māori learners, hapū, iwi and employers are improved. We are committed to responding with excellence to the priorities of Māori learners and their whānau.

Ara | Te Pūkenga works within its Framework for Māori Achievement which envisions whānau transformation through education, enterprise and agency. The framework is an integral document to guide planning and measure progress towards partnership and equity goals. A dedicated team guide the programme of work, focusing our resources on priority projects to lift Māori learner engagement and achievement. Workforce development is one of the priorities so that our learners see themselves reflected through teaching and learning, programmes and products, and our culture and policies.

To deliver effectively on the commitment to being a Tiriti-led organisation, Ara | Te Pūkenga recognises the need for a culturally competent and confident workforce across our organisation. Kaimahi (staff) collectively give effect to the Framework for Māori Achievement, and our strategic priority to have a relentless focus on equity. This requires us to think and act differently to transform the status quo. Te Pūkenga is committed to attracting and retaining kaimahi with Māori cultural capability, experiences, and connections to community to guide and support this commitment. Growing the capacity and capability of our workforce through the recruitment of culturally competent and confident individuals and providing a suite of capability development for all helps us deliver on our mission of providing positive experiences through kaupapa and mātauranga Māori.

As an employee, you too can grow professionally and culturally at Ara | Te Pūkenga. We are driven by the ethos depicted in the proverb ‘kia raka te mātau, kia raka te mauī.’ Our people are advantaged when they are both grounded and connected with our reo, tikanga and communities, and when they have the technical skills in their respective discipline areas. Our employees have told us that they are more engaged and feel well when they can contribute to our purpose of whānau transformation through education, enterprise and agency, when they have opportunities to connect to their purpose, and to grow their confidence culturally and professionally.

Working at Ara | Te Pūkenga you can expect your knowledge of Te Ao Māori to be valued and recognised in all that we do. Networks that support a kaupapa Māori community of practice have been established throughout our organisation. Kaimahi are supported to grow professionally and culturally, and we are committed to working with colleagues to find suitable working arrangements that support their own development and passions that contribute to our purpose of delivering positive experiences through kaupapa and mātauranga Māori, while upholding their substantive role.
