Ara Institute of Canterbury is proud to confirm that we will return to independence from 1 January 2026

Ara Institute of Canterbury welcomes the Government’s announcement confirming our return to independence from 1 January 2026.

This decision is a strong vote of confidence in Ara’s financial sustainability, our deep regional roots and our proven ability to deliver high-quality, work-integrated vocational education and training. It also recognises the dedication of our kaimahi, whose commitment to excellence and community impact has positioned Ara for long-term success.

For more than 120 years, Ara has been a trusted education partner for the Waitaha Canterbury region and beyond. As Aotearoa New Zealand’s largest provider of campus-based vocational education, we’re proud of our legacy of strong industry and community ties, equity and learner achievement.

Our recent organisational changes have strengthened our academic leadership and streamlined our support for learners, ensuring we will remain responsive to the evolving needs of our communities and industries.

Ara is ready to stand alone. We are focused, financially secure and deeply committed to transforming lives and strengthening communities through the power of education.

As we prepare for this next chapter in our proud history, you can expect Ara will be even more agile, community-connected and industry-aligned, with an unwavering commitment to delivering the skills and knowledge that help our region thrive.
